South Carolina football 2024 spring game guide: kickoff time, parking, weather

South Carolina fans will be back at Williams-Brice Stadium this weekend – and that includes the Gamecocks.

It is not yet the start of the season, but there will be a football match played on the field this weekend. Well, technically it’s a scrimmage.

The annual Garnet & Black Spring Game in South Carolina is this Saturday evening and is part of head coach Shane Beamer’s fourth season leading the Gamecocks. This is the first time fans have seen their football team in action since the season concluded on the same field in November.

Here’s a look at what this intrasquad matchup will bring and how you can enjoy the event.

The best storylines from South Carolina

Looking at the quarterbacks: South Carolina quarterbacks LaNorris Sellers and Robby Ashford will make their first public appearance as they battle for the starting QB. Both Gamecocks have impressed head coach Shane Beamer and offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains, but they have been in no rush to name a new starter.

Sellers has been the projected starter since last season ended and Spencer Rattler declared for the NFL Draft. Ashford joined USC during the winter transfer portal after spending two seasons at Auburn and two at Oregon.

Spreading the ball: This year’s offense has evolved significantly since November 2023. The tight ends are now the most experienced group of the USC offense, the running back room will be without projected leaders Raheim “Rocket” Sanders and Juju McDowell (both out) this weekend with injuries) and the The wide receiver room has been largely renovated.

The spring game will be Gamecocks fans’ first real look at what each of these three positions has in store and what Loggains is building for the upcoming season. There are speedy receivers, albeit undersized compared to last season, combined with veteran transfer tailbacks Oscar Adaway and Jawarn Howell, and the maturity of Joshua Simon as a tight end.

If you get a chance to watch the offense, you can answer a few questions South Carolina fans have been asking since spring ball started.

Bring up the defense: The likes of Debo Williams, Jalen Kilgore, Bam Martin-Scott and Nick Emmanwori all return for the defense. How has this group developed since last year? Saturday is your chance to find out.

Not every starter will get a lot of playing time during the scrimmage, as the coaching staff plans to have everyone participate on Saturday. But after an in-season defensive switch-up that put the Gamecocks in a bowl-or-stay-home scenario, a glimpse of this returning core should give fans an idea of what could happen when the season kicks off on August 31 go.
