STA holds review meetings to allocate poll vehicles on time

Bhubaneswar: The State Transport Department is diligently adhering to all directives of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) for the smooth conduct of the general elections. To review the same, a meeting was held by the State Transport Commissioner, Amitabh Thakur, with all senior officials of the State Transport Authority (STA) and Regional Transport Officers (RTOs), who participated through video conferencing.

“The purpose of the meeting was to ensure timely deployment of vehicles intended for election purposes. The department is prioritizing meticulous planning and addressing any shortcomings in the vehicle arrangement system,” an official said.

Based on the information provided to STA, the current status of vehicle applications from different regions was assessed. Therefore, the Commissioner has ordered a review and reassessment of vehicle requirements based on regional needs.

“The advance arrangements are in line with suggestions from previous election experiences and suggestions from appointed personnel, aimed at boosting morale and enthusiasm among vehicle owners and personnel participating in the election process,” Thakur said.

During the 2019 election, the department seized 58,000 vehicles statewide. The current estimate of the vehicle required for the ongoing elections will be determined soon to expedite the requisition process as advised by Thakur.

Moreover, emphasis has been placed on providing advance notice of daily expenses to the designated vehicle personnel while on duty. This was directed by Commerce and Transport Department Principal Secretary Usha Padhee to all district collectors. “Every bus and four-wheeler driver, conductor or assistant staff will receive a daily allowance of Rs. 500 and a two-wheeler driver will receive Rs. 250,” Padhee informed.
