One Dies, Property Burned in Ogun Gas Tanker Explosion

At least one person was reported dead, six others injured and six vehicles burnt in a gas tanker explosion on Saturday at Ita Osin along the Abeokuta-Sango-Lagos Expressway.

The spokesperson of the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Florence Okpe, disclosed this in a statement to journalists.

Okpe said the deceased was believed to be the engine boy of the gas-laden tanker.

The accident reportedly happened around 4:10 p.m.

The truck reportedly suffered a brake failure, after which it lost control and ended up on the side of the road.

It later went up in flames, with the fire engulfing five other cars and two shops around the accident scene.

Okpe said: “The crash occurred at around 4.10pm involving a tanker loaded with gas. The number of people involved was 06 and all the male adults, 02, were injured, but unfortunately 1 person died from the fire incident, namely the motorbike boy who was trapped.

“A total of 05 vehicles were involved with the following registration numbers: AAN544 YC NISSAN, GDB841XR MICRA, LSD993 CY NISSAN, T23771 LA SINO TRUCK and a HONDA CRV with no registration number on it.

“The suspected cause of the crash was a mechanical failure (brake failure) and the vehicle crash at the roadblock subsequently went up in flames and other nearby vehicles/shops were burnt.

“The fire brigade was immediately contacted and the accident scene was lit up to prevent a second accident.

“The corpse was deposited at the mortuary of the State General Hospital, Abeokuta and the injured victims were taken away by the family.

Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Fire Service Director, Fatai Adefala, said firefighters were still on the ground clearing the wreckage of the burnt tanker at the time of filing this report.
