Tornadoes destroy communities in Nebraska

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nebr. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) – Residents began searching through the rubble Saturday after multiple tornadoes tore through the suburbs of Omaha, Nebraska, and surrounding areas Friday evening.

The twisters caused a building to collapse, killing dozens of people, and destroyed and damaged hundreds of homes. Several injuries have also been reported, but no fatalities.

The outages peaked at 10,000 but had fallen to 4,300 by morning. Officials say firefighters have completed the search for damaged homes and structures.

The National Weather Service (NWS) is still evaluating the number and strength of tornadoes, with the agency saying the process could take up to two weeks.
