Artificial Intelligence, Ascani: “Understanding the social relevance of technological changes is the challenge of our time”

ROME – “Understanding the social relevance of the changes that artificial intelligence brings to our lives is the great challenge of our time. Politics has the duty and necessity to understand in order to deliberate effectively.” The Vice-President of the Chamber, Anna Ascani, said this when she welcomed participants from about 30 countries to the technical seminar dedicated to artificial intelligence applied to parliamentary work this afternoon at the Sala del Mappamondo. In the audience: heads of departments, innovation sector coordinators, teachers, researchers and AI developers. This is one of the phases leading up to the next G7 of parliaments, which will be chaired by the president of the chamber, Lorenzo Fontana, from September 5 to 7 in Verona.

Ascani illustrated today the work of the Monitoring Committee on the documentation activity, the meeting with the players in the field of AI, the fact-finding carried out and the expression of interest in the research community to collect new projects. “We deeply believe that artificial intelligence offers an extraordinary opportunity to improve various human activities in multiple areas – said the Vice President. But at the same time, to avoid real dangers, we believe that this great opportunity must be managed in a way that minimizes risks and maximizes benefits for citizens. Politicians and institutions are determined to put people – their talents, their needs, but also their vulnerabilities – at the center of the very rapid technological development we are witnessing.” Ascani’s speech was followed by the introduction of the Secretary General of the Chamber, Fabrizio Castaldi. Three work sessions will take place between today and tomorrow.
