S’Eagles will have a new coach in two weeks

The Minister of Sports, Senator John Enoh, has assured Nigerians that the senior national team, the Super Eagles, will have a new coach in the next one or two weeks.

Finidi George has taken over the team on an interim basis as the Nigeria Football Federation looks for a substantial replacement for Jose Peseiro, whose contract expired at the end of February.

“Unfortunately, the senior national team does not have a coach. We played two friendly matches and only allowed Finidi George to oversee those two matches.

“The primary responsibility for finding a coach lies with the NFF and I have been in touch with the NFF because I think Nigerians did not expect that after AFCON and after the contract with coach Peseiro expired and was not renewed, that it will just take as long and I don’t have a coach yet.

“But the NFF is aware that our next qualifiers in June, what I can assure is that the senior national team will have a new coach in the next one or maximum two weeks,” Enoh told Channels TV’s Sports Tonight on Thursday. .

The Eagles will be hoping to bounce back from disappointing draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe in their World Cup qualifier against South Africa in June.

The minister emphasized that the country cannot afford to miss another World Cup after the 2022 debacle.

“I don’t think we’ve had a great start. It’s a shaky situation, and that’s why we still have a lot of ground to cover, since we didn’t go to the last World Cup. We can’t afford not to go for the next one and that’s why everything has to be done.

“After AFCON and after we had a great show, I think everyone expects that we can consolidate that and go from there,” Enoh said.
