Ashutosh Sharma is no mini Surya: Suryakumar impressed with PBKS batsman’s masterclass

Star MI batsman Suryakumar Yadav hailed Ashutosh Sharma’s revival as a six-hit powerhouse for PBKS at IPL 2024. Ashutosh took charge of the MI bowlers on Thursday as he hit seven sixes and two fours to make 61 from just 28 balls, a blow that brought PBKS back from the abyss after an early collapse.

During an interview at Jio Cinema, Suryakumar emphasized that Ashutosh is not a mini Surya, highlighting the unique individuality of the PBKS batsman. However, he acknowledged a shared mentality between them as they strive to be game-changers for their respective teams.

“He’s not a mini-Surya, I think he showed his skills fantastically and at that moment I think if you hit like that, he almost won his team the match. I also have the mentality to come and bat and be a game-changer for the team, that’s what he tried today. I really enjoyed watching him bat,” Suryakumar told Jio Cinema. The star MI batsman played a match-winning knock of 78 runs off 53 balls to propel MI to a winning total of 192 runs. Suryakumar admitted that he wouldn’t have wanted Ashutosh to win the match but enjoyed his batting.

“I can’t say I wanted him to win the match for them, but the way he was batting I really enjoyed watching it. I was relieved when Punjab’s score was 14/4. I started to relax. Despite PBKS facing a tough situation at 77 for 6 with MI bowlers dominating, Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma rose to the challenge. Shashank contributed 41 runs from 25 balls while Ashutosh played a crucial role in bringing PBKS almost to a run-a-ball equation. Ashutosh’s fearless hitting stirred all the bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah, the current purple cap holder, whom he swept for a six. However, after Ashutosh’s dismissal in the 18th over, PBKS faltered and eventually lost the match by 9 runs.

ASHUTOSH-THE FIGHTER FOR PBKS

Suryakumar reveals that he has been in touch with Ashutosh and Shashank since their batting heroics against GT.

“When he played against the Gujarat Titans for the first time, it was the first time I messaged him, Shashank Singh and Ashutosh. There they had won the match from a similar situation. I speak to them regularly. I have their mentality and work ethic, which is brilliant. I hope they both keep playing like that and don’t change their game.”

Ashutosh emerged as the key player for PBKS and showed his resilience with a quick 31 off 17 balls against GT, securing a crucial win with 50 runs needed off 27 balls. In another match, he combined forces with Shashank to contribute 33 runs off 15 balls against SRH. Despite their valiant effort, the target proved too intimidating as PBKS fell short by just two runs, 69 of which were needed from 27 balls.
