Emma Raducanu returns to the Nottingham Open today and faces Ena Shibahara in the first round.

The former US Open champion is working her way up to Wimbledon after skipping the French Open to focus on her fitness.

Raducanu will test her body today in the hope of building form and momentum before SW19. Defending champion Katie Boulter got past Harriet Dart yesterday, with the latter leaving in anger after a line call. Dart offered the referee a £50,000 bet in the bad-tempered affair.

Ons Jabeur is also in action and the former Wimbledon finalist will face Camila Osorio later today.

Raducanu at Nottingham Open

“I would say that Nottingham is a special place in my career,” she said. “I love it because that’s where it all started: my first WTA match, then the following week I played the 100km and that’s where I got my Wimbledon wildcard because I didn’t get it at the first announcement.

“I had to win two races in the 100 km and then I got the wildcard and reached the fourth round at Wimbledon. So it is a very special place. If I hadn’t gotten that wildcard, who knows what would have happened, or if the US would have been there.

“So it’s a compilation of little moments where you don’t know what’s going to happen. Coming back here after winning the US Open is obviously different than before.”

Emma Raducana speaks about her injuries

“It was quite surreal because obviously I couldn’t walk on crutches because I’d had two wrist operations,” the Briton said of her injuries last season ahead of her Nottingham Open campaign.

“So I had a cast on one hand – I timed it so that obviously I didn’t have two casts at the same time – a splint on the other and my ankle was pretty much immobilized as well, in a splint and stitches. I would just walk around with one knee. As someone who is so active, it’s hard to just shut down your body.

“I think it’s very easy for me to lose track of where I was exactly a year ago because it’s been pretty much a year to the day, this month.

“You get so caught up in your own world that you keep wanting more and more. But a year ago I was riding around on a scooter and I didn’t know it – there was an element of doubt. To be healthy and be here, I have to cherish it. So thanks for reminding me to do that.

“Physically speaking, I feel very healthy. I feel very strong. I have been doing a great job with my trainer over the last few months since the surgery.

“I’m in a really good place. I think my wrists are actually in a better position than ever before.

“So there’s no doubt or fear about whether I’m hitting the ball or designing my scheme. It’s more about being proactive and not wanting to put yourself in unnecessary situations.”

Emma Raducanu issues a fitness update as preparation for Wimbledon begins with a return to the lawn

Emma Raducanu has to remind herself that this time last year she needed a mobility scooter as she prepared for her latest career start.

Raducanu, whose 2024 playing schedule was sporadic, is taking baby steps toward recovery from three surgeries last year that saw her go under the knife on both wrists and an ankle, leaving her needing help getting around.
