Christiansburg Huckleberry Park is off to a strong start in its first year

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – Leaders in Christiansburg have made it their mission to make the city a recreational destination, and after the opening of Christiansburg Huckleberry Park in September 2023, they are one step closer to this goal.

“In March we had over 108,000 visits to the park,” said Brad Epperley, director of parks and recreation for the city of Christiansburg. “Our goal for the first year is to reach 220,000 visits to the park, and we think we’re certainly on track to get there.”

The park has been running at full speed since its opening in September.

“It was better than expected,” Epperley said.

He said their biggest challenge in this first year is how popular the park is, which he thinks is a good thing.

“One of the things we realized early on is that we need additional parking,” Epperley said.

The park has two dog playgrounds, sports fields and an accessible climbing frame with splash pad.

One of the favorites of many children is the splash pad.

I spoke to a number of families who enjoyed the park, and they said that since the park opened, they have been taking their children several times a week.

“We love it,” they said. “It’s great. Nice that there is something for all ages. There are things for the little boys, but also fun things for the big boys.”

They said the amount of options the park has keeps them from getting bored.

“It has a lot of variety and a lot of fun different things; the music is always fun,” they said. “The park there is nice.”

Epperley said next on their to-do list is expanding parking and building pickleball courts.
