OpenAI hires first employee in India – Technology News

ChatGPT parent OpenAI has appointed Pragya Misra as head of policy and partnership in the country, experts say. Misra, who is currently working with Truecaller as director of public affairs, is expected to join OpenAI by the end of the month. In her previous role, Misra managed communications for WhatsApp.

With this, OpenAI has hired its first employee in India and looks to further expand his team, the industry executives said.

OpenAI’s move to first appoint a policy head comes at a time when the government is also working on regulations around artificial intelligence. Digital India Act (DIA) is in the making and will also address the aspects of regulating new technologies from the perspective of user harm.

Lately, in the run-up to the election, OpenAI has said it is investigating improving accurate voting information through ChatGPT, enforcing measured policies and improving transparency.

In June last year, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had visited India and also spoken to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Critical issues Altman highlighted during his visit included deepfakes, plagiarism, and how to establish a regulatory model as the AI ‚Äč‚Äčlandscape continues to evolve. Recently, issues with the biases of generative AI platforms have also been flagged by the Indian government.

OpenAI competes with the likes of Google Bard and Ola’s Krutrim AI.
